Twitter has apparently decided that it doesn’t want people who don’t have an account sharing tweets on other websites, so it has implemented a “annoyance wall” pop-up ad (below) which makes the site unusable for non-logged in users. Fortunately, there’s a way around this annoyance, using an open source software frontend to Twitter called “Nitter.”
I’ve been using Nitter for months now on social.quodverum.com to post links to tweets without sending clicks to Twitter. But I’ve been browsing Twitter myself on dozens of non-logged in browser tabs (I don’t have a Twitter account). Now, with this latest move by Twitter, I’m not even going to be reading Twitter directly anymore, and I’m switching all my tabs over to their Nitter equivalent. It’s easy to do.
First thing to know about Nitter is that there are multiple “instances” of the Nitter software hosted on servers around the world. The current list of Nitter instances is here:
https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/wiki/Instances
To link to a tweet using Nitter, just substitute the Nitter instance you want to use for “twitter.com” in the link.
For example, lately the Nitter server I’ve been using for links is nitter.domain.glass . So if I wanted to link this tweet by hilarious Christian satire site @TheBabylonBee,
https://twitter.com/TheBabylonBee/status/1427645000788156434
I can substitute “nitter.domain.glass” in place of “twitter.com” in the link:
https://nitter.domain.glass/TheBabylonBee/status/1427645000788156434
Or, if I wanted to see @TheBabylonBee’s timeline, I just do the same thing for the Twitter link,
https://twitter.com/TheBabylonBee/
and read the timeline at
https://nitter.domain.glass/TheBabylonBee/
Nitter’s developers say they eventually plan to implement a way to “follow” your favorite Twitter accounts on Nitter. Of course, you can only read, but can’t “like,” “share,” or comment on tweets using Nitter, but if all you want to do is read Twitter without sending clicks to Twitter, or dealing with their ridiculous “annoyance wall” popup, Nitter is a good way to do it.
